The Empire State Building
Shreve, Lamb, and Harmon
New York City, 1930

The Chrysler Building did not reign long as the tallest, it was usurped just a few month's later by the Empire State Building. The Empire State was a purely commercial venture and executed with height as its goal. The building is not really innovative or creative in any way. It is at least a graceful giant, but it was only a symbol of sheer size and did not capture the public's imagination that way the Chrysler Building had.
