Rockefeller Center was the dream of John D. Rockefeller Jr. He wanted to create a cluster of buildings that could be a center, a focal point for New York. The design and materials used in the structures were quite standard but the concepts behind their arrangement were not. Rockefeller Center represented a new view of urban planning: the community of buildings. These structures were designed to be part of a larger context. No longer was the skyscraper viewed as a single, isolated unit, it was part of the whole city.
