February 17, 1936

The 1936 winter Olympic Games were held in Garmisch-Partenkirchen, and Herr Hitler announced the opening of the games. After two years of preparations, Germany hoped to receive athletes from around the world and send them out as "friendly missionaries of the Third Reich." Although most athletes greeted Hitler with the Olympic salute (which closely resembles the Nazi salute), American athletes opted not to acknowledge him at all to avoid giving false impressions. Germany also held the summer Olympics in 1936, in Berlin.
