The January 4, 1932 issue of Time featured Pierre Laval as the "Man of the Year" for 1931. In a meteoric political rise, he went from being a provincial mayor to being appointed French Premier. Laval dominated Prime Minister Braind's Cabinent througout 1931, pushing his legislative and domestic agenda through the French Chamber and Senate. The article stated that Laval was the only man worthy of the "Man of the Year" status, as he was the only one to achieve greatness in the particluarly harsh year of 1931.
