The old baseball superstition that whichever team is in first place on July 4 placed the sport on the July cover of Time. Not only was there speculation about who would make the playoffs during the dog days of summer, there was also talk of Joe DiMaggio. Hailed as the "prize find of the decade," DiMaggio supported all the claims made about him with the numbers he posted in the first half of the season and the influence he had on the Yankees' lead in the American League.
