October 5, 1936

October - home of the baseball playoffs. In 1936, the World Series was confined to New York, where a "subway series" occurred between the NY Giants and Yankees. To compensate for all the fans attending the games, NY's Interborough Rapid Transit Co. promised to double the length of its trains. This year was only the fifth World Series in baseball history, at a time when baseball's popularity was increasing in the nation. Key players were expected to be Carl Hubbell of the Giants and Lou Gehrig of the Yanks, pictured on this month's cover.
