This site presents the history of jazz in three historical segments. The color green marks the "Jazz Roots" section. All links in that portion of the site appear in green. Red indicates the "Swing Era" section of the site, while purple represents the "Cool Jazz and Hard Bop" section. Each of these three historical sections contains five main sub-sites: Introduction; Timbre of the Times/Jazz in Context; Jazz Style; Jazz and Technology; and Jazz Artists. Each of these sub-sites links to the other four sub-sites in the same time period, as well as to the corresponding sub-site in the other two time periods (e.g., Swing Era Artists links to Jazz Roots Artists and Cool Jazz and Hard Bop Artists). One can thus navigate the site by period, examining each aspect of one particular period, or by subject, moving directly from technology in the era of early jazz to technology in the era of swing, etc. Links to the same category in other periods appear along the top of the screen; links to the other categories in the same time period appear at the bottom of the page.

The sub-sites on Jazz Style and Timbre of the Times contain menus which link to galleries, literary excerpts, sound and video files, etc. These resources do not link to parallel resources in the other two historical sections of the site, but they do provide links back to the previous menu, from which the corresponding menus can be accessed.
