Introduction

"True Portrait of the Conqueror," by Johann Michael Voltz, 1804. In addition to the bodies which make up Napoleon's face, inscribed upon the coat is a map of the battles in the Leipzig campaign.

King Louis-Philippe, as "Le Poire". This famous 1831 cartoon caused artist Charles Philipon to be temporarily imprisoned.

"A Chapter on Noses," from George Cruikshank's My Sketch Book, 1833-1836. The central cartoon depicts the artist exacting his revenge upon former publisher William Kidd.

Abraham Lincoln

"Don Quixote and Sancho Panza," by Adalbert John Volck. This etching presents General Benjamin Butler as the overly influential advisor to Lincoln's Don Quixote; Butler was infamous for his cruel treatment of Southerners.

In this Volck print, Lincoln is a jester in a macabre comedy.

"Honest Abe's Rudder," by Matt Morgan, 1863. In this cartoon, a canine Lincoln, with the tin kettles of "Ironsides" and the "Monitor" tied to his tail, flees a battle at Fort Sumter.

This cartoon mixes nascent American metaphor by depicting Lincoln with what would become Uncle Sam's striped pants. The caption to this Sir John Tenniel cartoon has the President exclaiming "What? No Money! No Men!"

"Passage Through Baltimore," also by Volck. This 1863 print satirizes Lincoln's fear of being assasinated on his way to Washington to assume the Presdency.

Tenniel drew "the Federal Phoenix" for Punch in 1864. The documents being burned in the phoenix's rebirth are labeled "Commerce," "United States Constitution," "Free Press," "State Rights," "Habeas Corpus," and "Credit."
