American Hypertext Workshop: Getting Started
By the time we meet next week, you should have done the following:
- open a Unix account through accounts@virginia.edu;
- have your pcmail forwarded to this new account (if you've only been using a pcmail
account or if you've never actively used your UVA account);
- from uMenu, selected 7) uMenu Reference Manual and read it;
- subscribe to a selection of newsgroups under Electronic News in
uMenu
- go to 8) Internet Services, then to 1) About the Internet and then read (at the
minimum)
4) Network Guidelines and Etiquette,5) Network Etiquette,7) There's Gold in
Them Thar Networks,Zen and the Art of the Internet, and Bibliography of
Internetworking
Information;
- again, go to 8) Internet Services, connect to 2) UVA Grounds-Wide Information
System(gwis), to 3) Connect to PUBLIC, and to 4) Library Services.
For the week after next, I want you, first, to set up a
public_html directory in your unix account so you can create your own home page and make
it accessible via the Web. Next, I want you to create your home page. If you wish, you can simply
use this sample home page as a template. All you need do is copy
this file into you public_html directory, then modify it to suit. This will be where you will do most
of your work this semester and where that work will be visible for class discussion. Finally, you
should begin the WWW Tutorials
