The Simpsons pushes the boundaries of the sitcom, but it does not step outside them. Even though Homer, Marge, Bart, Lisa, and Maggie have the capacity to ridicule not only the larger American society but themselves, the Simpson family dynamic still sends the message that conforming to the group is the natural outcome of events. While the Simpsons is unusual in that it satirizes the American family with more bite than some, it is one among several shows like that and it stops short of pushing for any changes in the American family structure.
