1. The original chapter 4 contained only the first two paragraphs above, but for the 1815 edition, Brackenridge merged chapter 2 into this chapter 1. In 1819, it becomes Book 3 Chapter 3.
2. What follows was a chapter in its own right in the serial and 1815 editions. Brackenridge consolidated it with two other chapters in 1819.
3. For this final edition, this line was deleted: "Quoi! encore la bouche ouverte, you open de mout again Monsieur Patrick."
4. This short phrase, added in 1815, was deleted for 1819: "severe corporeal".
