About
the Index of American Design
In the 1930s, President Franklin Delano Roosevelt instituted a series
of work-relief programs to help Americans out of the Depression
crisis. One of these programs was the Federal Art Project (FAP),
a division of the Works Progress Administration.
The FAP's Index of American Design project employed a thousand artists
around the country to document America's decorative arts. From 1935
to 1941, these artists created more than 18,000 watercolors of quilts,
toys, chests, signs, glassware, and other objects.
Visit
the galleries herein to see the artists'
lifelike renderings of ship figureheads and stern pieces. Paintings
of other objects are showcased in the Index
of American Design Online Exhibit.
