Madonna: Plantation Mistress or Soul Sister?
by bell hooks
Madonna is no political radical. Despite her position at the forefront of
radical chic, in reality she leads a parade of the "same old phallic
nonsense" and masks her "racist aggression as affirmation" of black
culture. For even as she appropriates
black culture and seems to affirm it by making it mainstream, the film
"Truth or Dare" reveals her domination of those that depend upon her
people of color and working class whites - along traditional, white
supremacist, patriarchal lines. There's also the "Like A Prayer"
video in which she makes a mockery as well
as a prodigious use of stereotypes of the black religious experience. Oh
yeah, she's bad. But she's bad because she's a blonde in blackface. The
political reality behind Madonna is white supremacy and racism.
