Narrates the complicated search for the American hobo, an omnipresent yet misunderstood character who might only be found in the various mediated sources in which he appears.

Blue Plate Special

An Anthology of Thirties' Prose whose selections depict, reflect, inform or challenge our notions of life in the 1930s. Divided into categories called City Scapes, Rural Scenes, Hoboes and Tramps, The Media Mirror, The Camera Eye and Proletarian Writing, the hope is to give a taste of what people were reading and writing in the decade between the Depression and World War Two.

The View From Here

The View From Here looks at national and cultural events through the lens of Charlottesville and the surrounding area. The projects were compiled by undergraduates working under the guidance of The Institute for Public History's Phyllis Leffler and Brian Balogh in the Department of History.

Project turned over to new caretakers in Fall of 2001.

The Incorporation of the Kitchen

An investigation of the effects of industrialization on foodways in America. A hypertext extension of Alan Trachtenberg's The Incorporation of America, the site looks at technological changes affecting production, the growth and development of advertising, and the food corporations that advertising and technology helped create.

Images of Geo. Washington in the Index of American Design

A collection of images of George Washington as documented in the WPA produced Index of American Design. While the Index presents collections of traditional handicrafts like pottery, glassware, and woodworking as drawn and painted by artists, Washington made his way into so many physical 'languages' that he could not be ignored as an element of expression in American handicraft.
