This was the image of Chautauqua that visitors saw as they approached on the steamboat. The Athenaeum Hotel, on the Chautauqua grounds, where many wealthier visitors chose to stay during the season.

The Aula Christi (Hall of Christ), a dream of John Heyl Vincent, is used solely for the study of religion. This 1887 map of the grounds shows that Chautauqua became a community in and of itself. The black area on the bottom left is the location of a fire earlier that year, which led to even more building and growth.
