|Tobacconists were certainly not the only merchants to use wood sculptures as lures for potential consumers. They also did not have a monopoly on the use of ethnic Others to create a romantic aura around the shop. Just as cigar stores relied on the image of the Indian as the original bearer of the tobacco leaf, some tea shops used idealized Chinese figures. These figures may have lent an air of authenticity to the tea purveyed in these shops.
