Windows 95 Dial-Up Networking

Guidelines for UVa Users

Q: How do I install Dial-Up Networking in Windows 95 to access UVA's network?

To see if Dial-Up Networking is installed, click Start, point to Programs, point to Accessories, and see if an icon for Dial-Up Networking exists.

If you have a Dial-Up Networking icon, Dial-Up Networking is installed and ready to use. If you do not have a Dial-Up Networking icon, add Dial-Up Networking. To do so, have your Windows 95 installation disks or CD ROM ready and follow these steps:

  1. Click Start, then Settings, then click Control Panel.
  2. Double-click Add/Remove Programs.
  3. On the Windows Setup tab, single-click on the word "Communications" (do not click the check box next to communications), then click Details.
  4. Click to select the Dial-Up Networking check box, then click OK.
  5. On the Windows Setup tab, click OK. Windows 95 now installs the necessary components to use Dial-Up Networking.

At this point, you should make sure you have the right protocols and services set up for your dialup networking. There are four protocols normally installed by default which most people should remove.

The Client for Microsoft Networking and the protocol NETBEUI should be removed because ITC does not support these. Our network routers cannot handle the load of advertising every machine as if it were a peer-to-peer server on the network, so those routers block the peer-to-peer features from crossing subnet boundaries. In other words, if you leave these drivers in, they won't do much except slow down your local subnet. It is best to remove them.

The Client for Netware Networks and the protocol IPX/SPX should be removed for most people because enabling remote Novell server access will reduce the performance of your dial up connection. Every 60 seconds your machine will pause as the Novell server information is sent to it. ITC does not recommend that you enable this feature unless you require it.

If you require access to a Netware server (like ACCPUBLIC or a departmental server) then you may find this delay worth the performance cost. You may even choose to add and remove this driver from time to time, depending on what you wish to do during a particular dialup session.

Meanwhile, for everyone wishing to delete these four drivers and add drivers which will support Netscape and Telnet, follow these numbered steps:

  1. Click Start:Settings:Control Panel:Network.
  2. Select Client for Microsoft Networks from the list of drivers and click "delete".
  3. Select Client for Netware Networks from the list of drivers and click "delete".
  4. Select NetBEUI from the list of drivers and click "delete".
  5. Select IPX/SPX from the list of drivers and click "delete".
  6. If you see a line for TCP/IP, skip the rest of these numbered instructions.
  7. Click the "Add" button.
  8. Select "protocol".
  9. From the left column, select "Microsoft".
  10. From the right column, select "TCP/IP".
  11. Click "Okay" until you return to the Control Panel. You will get a message telling you that you need to restart your computer in order for your changes to take effect. It will offer to restart Windows for you. Please accept that offer.

To create a connection for a PPP account, follow these steps:
  1. Click Start, point to Programs, point to Accessories, and then click Dial-Up Networking.
  2. If this is the first time you have used Dial-Up Networking, the Welcome To Dial-Up Networking Wizard appears. If the wizard does not appear, double-click Make New Connection and follow the instructions for creating a Dial-Up Networking connection. The four telephone numbers you will need to access UVA's network are: You may wish to set up multiple Dialup Networking icons so you can bypass a busy modem to try out one that might not be busy.
  3. Once the connection is created, an icon appears in the Dial-Up Networking folder that you can double-click to connect to the Internet.

As of June 11, 1996 there has been a change in the configuration of the 14.4 modems. Anyone who installed Dialup Networking before that time may want to reconfigure their sessions to take advantage of the "autosensing" features now in place. Simply review the steps in the following numbered list, paying special attention to item 3.
Please follow these steps to configure your Dialup Networking session:
  1. Using the right mouse button, click the newly created icon in the Dial-Up Networking folder, and then click Properties.
  2. On the General tab, click Configure.
  3. On the Options tab, make sure the "Bring up terminal window after dialing" check box is NOT selected, and then click OK.
  4. On the General tab, click Server Type.
  5. In the Type Of Dial-Up Server list, click "PPP: Windows 95, Windows NT 3.5, Internet," and then click to select the TCP/IP check box in the Allowed Network Protocols area.
  6. Click TCP/IP Settings.

To use resources on the Internet, you must enter your three DNS server addresses. These are: The wizard only allows you to enter the first two. Also, it oddly does not seem to pass these on to the TCP/IP driver. To add the third one:
  1. Finish with the Wizard, then click Start.
  2. Choose Settings.
  3. Choose Control Panel.
  4. Double-click Network.
  5. Single-click TCP/IP
  6. Click the Properties button.
  7. Choose the DNS tab at the top of the dialog box.
  8. If the first two DNS entries are there, enter 128.143.3.7 in the box above the other two DNS addresses and click the Add button. If there are no entries there yet, enter all three DNS addresses in the sequence shown above. The sequence is important.

Now, you are finished configuring Dial-up Networking. To use it, you must double-click the icon you just created for one of the four telephone numbers to access the UVA network. A dialog box will appear showing a box for your ID and a box for your password. These are intended for your Dialin account at UVA.


If you do not have a Dialin account at UVA yet, please follow the following steps:
  1. Click the Start button, then Program, then Accessories, then HyperTerminal.
  2. Double click "New Connection".
  3. Give the telephone number 982-5964. This is a special telephone number which is specifically set up to give you a Dialin account, to change your Dialin password or to verify your Dialin password.
  4. When you make the connection, you will get a log in prompt. DO NOT ENTER YOUR ID. Instead, you must enter the single word "dialin".
  5. Next, you get a menu with three options. You should choose "Create a new dialin account."
  6. You will be asked for your Social Security number, your last name and your birthdate. These will serve to identify you.
  7. The system will then tell you your ID and ask for your password. This will be a new password you are now creating. Like all UNIX passwords, it cannot be a common name or word. It must be 6-8 characters long. It is better to mix letters and numbers and to have some uppercase letters mixed in. The password is case sensitive. The idea is to make a password you can remember, but no one else can guess. You might intentionally misspell a word in a way that you can remember, or use the first letter of each word in a sentence you can remember. Again, you want a password that you can remember and others cannot guess. Since the system will reject passwords it considers to be too easy to guess, you may want to have more than one password ready. Also, please do not write down your passwords. Instead, write down a clue that will help you remember it, but that would not allow someone else to guess your password if they found your written clue.
  8. You will have to enter the new password twice so the computer knows you have not mistyped your first attempt, resulting in your not knowing your own password.
  9. Once back at the opening menu, you might choose to verify your password to make sure it is currently in effect. When you are sure that it is working, close HyperTerminal.

When you know you have a Dialin account and you have the Dial-up Networking opening dialog box in front of you, please follow these steps:
  1. Make sure that you have the correct ID and password entered in the dialog box. Windows will often fill in the ID for you based upon the name you gave when you installed Windows 95, so that may not be your Email ID. Many people type in the proper password, but forget to check for the proper ID, since it is already filled in. Remember to check that the ID is correct.
  2. Click the "connect" button.
  3. You will hear the modem dial and attempt to connect. If you hear a busy signal, you will see a dialog box telling you that the system is busy now. Try again later.
  4. If the modem makes a connection, a small dialog box will briefly tell you that it is checking your ID and password. It will then tell you that you are connected and show the duration of your connection. You may minimize this dialog box if you wish to get it out of your way, or you may leave it somewhere on your screen so you can see how long you have been connected. This will be significant if you are using the 1 hour limit access number.

Now, all of the network related functions on your computer should work. Netscape, PCMail, access to ACCPUBLIC and such should all work (presuming that they have been installed).

We've had reports of a rare problem where Netscape, Telnet and FTP work with UVA-local systems, but fail to access remote systems on the Internet. If you have this problem, or other unusual problems once you have followed these instructions up to this point, then click here.
