Patterns
A
study of the contemporary fashion magazines, pattern services,
and catalogues of the 1920s and 1930s provide invaluable information
and insight into the era. The women's magazines of these decades
contain a great deal of information for the homemaker. Current
fashions were not the only focus: how to make clothing, where
to buy the patterns, how to alter or re-trim "last year's"
clothes to conform to new fashions were regular features. Acceptable
skirt lengths for specific occasions as well as proper fabric
and color choices were also covered. Women couldn't do without
their magazines and traded them with their friends.
This
section provides a look at some of these dress styles--complete
with patterns--from the 1920s and 1930s.
