A sketch of Nancy Astor done by John Singer Sargeant in the early 1900s. THE LADY ASTOR

Nancy Witcher Astor, neé Langhorne, was born in 1879 in Danville, Virginia. She married Waldorf Astor in 1906, and in 1919 she became the first woman to serve in the British Parliament's House of Commons. It was she who donated what is now the Astor Collection to the University of Virginia. See her correspondence regarding the donation and a biographical essay.
