Punch cover

Punch. 1 Aug. 1896: cover.

This Punch cover, with its clown-like motley fool (he appeared on every cover), shows the influence of theater on British cartooning. Punch, which also called itself the "London Charivari" (carnival), was an illustrated magazine much like Puck or Life.

Below:

"The Somersault Cure!" Punch 10 October 1896: 178. This shows cartooning's narrative ability—almost like storyboards—which such magazines often featured.
