"A.R. and Kenneth Lawrence, Yonkers, N.Y., 1893." American Home Life, 1880-1930: A Social History of Spaces and Services. Ed. by Jessica H. Foy and Thomas J. Schlereth.Knoxville, The University of Tennessee Press. 78.
"A.R.'s long baby gown kept little ones warm and discouraged crawling on all fours, since Victorian parents were still uncomfortable with such an animalistic form of locomotion, no matter how temporary. Kenneth's velvet suit, consisting of jacket and skirt, was commonly worn for best by boys who had outgrown the more feminine toddler's frocks but were still too young for short pants. Collection of Karin Calvert."
