WHILE WE STAND HERE
John Lewis
Washington, DC
August 28, 1963
John Lewis was a radical among the civil rights leadership. His address, remarked the historian Taylor Branch, expressed "scolding, cold-eyed idealism."

John Lewis, leader of the Student Nonviolent Coordinating Committee (SNCC), addressed the largest civil rights gathering at the Lincoln Memorial. His fiery oratory proved unsettling to march organizers.
