Lewis was a radical among the civil rights leadership. His address, remarked
the historian Taylor Branch, expressed "scolding, cold-eyed idealism."
John Lewis, leader of the Student Nonviolent Coordinating Committee (SNCC), addressed the largest civil rights gathering at the Lincoln Memorial. His fiery oratory proved unsettling to march organizers.
