The 1951 movie version of A Streetcar Named Desire popularized the play even further. Although Vivien Leigh was cast as Blanche instead of Jessica Tandy, the movie was directed by Elia Kazan, who directed the Broadway show, and kept the other three lead actors. Vivien Leigh, Karl Malden and Kim Hunter all garnered Oscars for their performances.
