The Scene of the Crime

The scene where Oakland Police Officer John Frey was killed at approximately 5:17 AM on October 28, 1967, after stopping Newton's tan Volkswagon (1). Officer Herbert Heanes arrived on the scene moments before the shooting and was wounded while standing behind his patrol car (3). The body of Officer Frey was found laying between his patrol car (2) and Heanes' car. A law book belonging to Huey P. Newton was also found next to Frey's body, and was the chief evidence leading to his arrest.
