Canary Wharf:
The New Financial District of London

|
Of special interest to students seeking employment abroad, the new financial district, Canary Wharf has been called the "success story of London in the 90s." Located outside of central London, this business park was designed and built to provide up-and-coming businesses with space unavailable within the limits of The City, a square mile area that prevents the established financial district from growing physically. A distinct erection along London's cityscape, Canary Wharf sits opposit to and metaphorically mirrors the Millenium Dome as an up-and-coming landmark representative of London as "the new millenium city: young, exciting, buzzing, growing," quite "in contrast to the sedate attitudes and traditions" the City. Best known for its 50-floor tower, which rising 800 feet in the air, makes itself Great Britain's tallest building. The entire commercial centre, however, contains ten office buildings, occupied by "more than 27,000 people" working in "some of the world's biggest names in banking, the media and industry."
