After being told that Charlie is not entitled to the rewards that Wonka previously promised him, Grandpa Joe storms into Wonka's office and demands an explanation. Wonka's office is noticably bizarre; every article therein appears cut in half. His furniture, documents, and ornaments are all skewed. Wonka is, in fact, the only element of the office not broken in two.

The scene in Wonka's office is much longer and slow-paced than any other scene in the film. Special attention is paid to the strangeness of the props and Wonka's obvious distinction from them.

In a world of false promises and poor motives, Wonka and his hopeless optimism are the only things that remain whole. Charlie, Grandpa Joe, and the gobstopper that Charlie returns to Wonka are set apart in this room as symbols of truth and goodness in an otherwise degraded landscape.
