"The possession and maintenance of slaves employed in the production of goods and argues wealth and prowess, but the maintenance of servants who produce nothing argues still higher wealth and position"(63).

Just before the start of this clip, Augustus Gloop has fallen into the chocolate river as a consequence of his over eager consumption. The nonplussed Wonka calls in the oompa loompas to take care of the mess. He speaks to these orange and green midgets in a kind and respectful tone and later he explains that he saved them from the outside world.

Thus, Wonka again defines the role of the leisure class by possessing what are implied as slaves, but choosing instead to maintain them as servants. The oompa loompas are integrally involved in the secret processes of candymaking; thus, it could be argued that they produce nothing, since candy is a luxury good.

As an aside, it is interesting to note that the oompa loompas possess a sort of deep wisdom. This song is the first in a series of didactic medleys, each of which follows the exit of one child from the factory. Here, the oompa loompas berate Augustus for his gluttony.
