Geographic Names Information Web site -
The Geographic Names Information System contains information about almost 2 million physical and cultural geographic features in the United States and its territories. The federally recognized name of each feature described in the database is identified, and references are made to a feature's location by state, county, and geographic coordinates. The GNIS is the United State's official repository of domestic geographic names information.
GeoNet Names Server -
The GEOnet Names Server (GNS) provides access to the National Geospatial-Intelligence Agency's (NGA) and the U.S. Board on Geographic Names' (US BGN) database of foreign geographic feature names. The database is the official repository of foreign place-name decisions approved by the US BGN. Approximately 20,000 of the database's features are updated monthly. Run by NIMA.
