About the American Studies Portal

Welcome!

Welcome to the University of Virginia's portal for electronic resources for teaching and studying American culture(s). Originally funded, in part, by the Mellon Foundation, this is an ongoing project of the American Studies Programs at the University of Virginia and the University of Virginia Library.

The anticipated audience for the database includes students and teachers in schools and universities as well as the general reader interested in understanding American history, literature, art, architecture, music, etc. We have carefully evaluated each site for accuracy, richness, and utility as well as for design, construction, and ease of use.

We have also attempted to choose sites that will remain viable over time, and we check the sites throughout the year. At the same time, we will appreciate it if you will notify us of any links that fail to work. We will also appreciate nominations of sites that we have not found but that you have found particularly useful.
