WHY DID THE EMIGRANTS
HEAD WEST?

emigrants leaving home

It is a good question but there is no simple answer.  In the 1840's, people in the east got most of their information about Oregon and California from newspapers.  However, the newspapers published as much bad news about heading west as they published good news so that propaganda was not necessarily the main motivating force.  It is more than likely that there were as many reasons for heading west as there were people who headed west.
