THE IRISH FAMINE

The following is a copy of an address from the Irish prelates in acknowledgement of the contributions which have been raised in England for the relief of the distressed poor in Ireland --

"We, the undersigned Irish prelates, to whom have been intrusted large contributions of money from England, transmitted by various public societies and committees, by the parochial clergy, and by private individuals, for the relief of the destitute poor of Ireland, feel ourselves bound to return our most grateful acknowledgements to the generous donors for the aid whichthey have afforded to those who have been suffering from famine and disease. These funds we have applied to the relif of the poor of all religious persuasions, and many thousands of persons have thereby been saved from perishing.

Although in several districts of the country the distress of the poor is still of the most urgent kind, and in some parts is even increased by reason of the removal of a number of labourers from employment on the public works preparatory to the adoption of the new system of temporary relief provided by the Legisaltrue, we cannot any longer defer giving expression tothe gratitutde which we feel for the munificent charity and Christian sympathy manifested by the British public toward their afflicted fellow subjects in Ireland. And while we earnestly pray that England may never experience within her own borders such a calamity as that which Almight God has seen fit to send upon our portion of the empire, it is our fervent desire that throughthe Divine mercy this awful visitation may be the means of uniting more clearly in the bonds of brotherhood and goodwill the inhabitants of both countries, and of inspiring with lasting sentiments of mutual regrad for each other the noble-minded relievers of this distress, and the sufferers who have so largely partaken of their bounty.
