Quebec
"But what has interested us most keenly in Canada are its inhabitants. All the
labouring population of Quebec is French. One scarce hears anything but
French in the streets. However, all the signs are in English; there are only two
theatres, which are English. The interior of the town is ugly but has no analogy
with American cities. It resembles in striking fashion the interior of the
majority of our provincial towns."
Tocqueville, diary 8/27 (Pierson 320)
