Puritan Chests

Hadley chests derive from the work of Captain John Allis of Hadley, Massachusetts. Hundreds of Hadley chests exist; Allis either trained a number of apprentices, or his distinctive style was intricately duplicated by others. Characteristic of Allis's style are: floral forms with incised lines for detailing, sharp contrasts between surface decoration and sunken background, complete treatment of the chest front, and plain panelling of the chest ends.
