Marin's emphasis on the urban landscape was echoed by Oscar Bluemner, an architect who began painting in 1912 and wrote some of his first articles for Camera Work in 1913. Harlem River, with its reduced forms
and emphasis on industrial structures, like Sheeler's Landscape, prefigures Precisionism, often described as a mixture of cubist abstraction and realism. Stuart Davis, who is less known for his early Ashcan-style paintings as for his later abstract works, exhibited a series of urban, working-class women in debauched poses and explicitly sexual encounters, as in Babe La Tour (left) and The Musician. |
