James Abott McNeill Whistler
American, 1834-1903
Arrangement in Grey and Black: Portrait of the Painter's Mother, 1875.
(not included in the Armory Show)

Four paintings by Whistler were included in the Armory Show: Andromeda (1857), Portrait (n.d.), Study in Rose and Brown (n.d.), and The Little Blue Bonnet. His most famous painting, shown above, was known for its elusive title, Arrangement in Grey and Black. Although now recognized simply as Whistler's Mother, the original title indicated Whistler's focus on the compositional aspects of art production rather than narrative or moral considerations.
