This course will examine the origins, philosophies, tactics, events, personalities, and consequences of the southern civil rights movement from 1900 to the mid-1960s. Readings, lectures, and videos will be the basis for the final examination. Students will be required to write two short (5-7page) papers. The final grade will be determined based on the two papers (25% each), the final examination (30%), and discussion section participation (20%).
