Deborah E. McDowell was born in Bessemer, Alabama. Educated at Tuskegee Institute and Purdue University, she is currently a Professor of English and African-American studies at the University of Virginia. McDowell is the author of various scholarly texts, including "The Changing Same": Studies in Fiction by Black American Women, co-editor with Arnold Rampersand of Slavery and the Literary Imagination, and an editor of the recently published Norton Anthology of African-American Literature. She has been a Fellow at the Woodrow Wilson Center in Washington, D.C. and the Bunting Institute. She was the founding editor of the Black Women Writers' Series, published by Beacon Press. McDowell Lives in Charlottesville, VA.
