Government and Policy

National Association for the Advancement of Colored People (NAACP)

The primary focus of the NAACP continues to be the protection and enhancement of the civil rights of African Americans and other minorities. Their website provides the history of the organization, news about recent events and conferences, and other updates.

Congressional Black Caucus Foundation Inc.

The Congressional Black Caucus Foundation, Inc. (CBCF) was established in 1976 as a non-partisan, non-profit, public policy, research and educational institute. As envisioned by its founders, the CBCF's mission is to assist the leaders of today, while helping to prepare a new generation of leaders for the future. To that end, the CBCF has worked to broaden and elevate the influence of African Americans in the political, legislative and public policy arenas.

An expansive site of the Smithsonian Institute's museum. This site offers exhibits, resources, educational materials, and other information pertinent to this museum. A well-laid out site. 

Film & Music

Archives of African American Music

This site provides a very helpful list of internet resources that explore African-American music.

Black Film Center/Archive

The Black Film Center/Archive is a repository of films and related materials by and about African Americans. Included are films which have substantial participation by African Americans as writers, actors, producers, directors, musicians, and consultants, as well as those which depict some aspect of black experience. In order to maintain a comprehensive research archive, the BFC/A does not distribute any part of its collection. However, the BFC/A maintains a database of over 8,000 films, not all of which are in the collection. For a minimal fee, database research information concerning those films is available to be faxed or mailed.

African-American Perspectives

The African American Perspectives collection offers a distinguished selection of educational videos on African American life, history, literature and culture. These acclaimed and thought-provoking documentaries - many funded by the National Endowment for the Humanities, the Ford Foundation, or the Corporation for Public Broadcasting - can help you bring a Black perspective to a variety of courses and programs. You can search the African American Perspectives video collection using many different criteria, including the course you teach. Choose from the list on the left.

African-Americans in Sports

From LIU, this exhibit represents a glimpse into the history of sports and the role the African-American played in that arena. On view are seven major sporting events - boxing, horse racing, cycling, track and field, basketball, baseball, and football - which opened the doors to the expanding Sports Arenas of today. Books, photoprints, tapes, replicated sports memorabilia, periodicals, news clips, and lots of historical notes are represented. The life of Michael Jordan: The Making of an Athlete is presented in full view and a special tribute to the late Jackie Robinson is also on view.
